Much of the professional correspondence concerns the biographies, articles, and speeches he wrote about political and literary figures, such as Aaron Burr and General Benjamin F. Butler, and his interest in copyright and other legal matters. Also includes correspondence of Ellen Willis Eldrege Parton and Ethel Parton. Finally there are Parton's financial accounts with publishers, photographs, genealogies, and printed material.

A Founding Father, he served as the third vice president of the United States during President Thomas Jefferson's first term from 1801 to 1805.
